English Club Stages Debating Contest 2009
Thursday, June 04, 2009
The annual Debating Contest sponsored by the English Club was held on 27 May 2009. The objective of this event was to bring out the argumentative sides in the students, thereby honing their reasoning and researching skills in the process.
The mechanics of this year’s debating contest required the participants to focus on one topic; therefore the contest only consisted of two rounds.
In this year’s battle of wits and words, the topic was “Origin of Man: Is it best explained by science or religion?” which was obviously quite controversial.
In the first round of the debate, Viggo, Maria, and Willy represented the Science side while their opponents, Sri, Jessica, and Meina, represented the Religion side. The next two groups were composed of Steven, Henry, and Thomas taking the Science side while Kevin, Maggie, and Franklin defended the Religion side in the second round.
All teams presented informative statements supported by sufficient evidence. Finally, after much deliberation, Viggo, Maria, and Willy won first place and received Rp.600,000 while Steven, Henry, and Thomas got Rp.300,000 as the runners-up.
All in all, the debating contest proved to be quite exhilarating. The continuous and passionate exchanges of ideas and reasons were very entertaining and educational.
