GS FAME Students Awed and Amazed in Yangshou
Thursday, August 19, 2010

GUILIN, CHINA. Friday the 13th might spell bad omen to the superstitious but not to the participants of this year’s Sandwich Program of the GS FAME INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS in Guilin, China. In fact, last Friday’s program for the Cultural and Study Tour meant memorable moments as this marks the first time that this year’s group went out of the beautiful city of Guilin to appreciate an equally awesome city, Yangshou.

The visit to Silver Cave drew rave reviews from the participants themselves who wrote about it on their weekly journal. Referring to the magnificent cave, Sylvia wrote that the “art of nature is fascinating…we can feel God’s power who created all of it.” Vanesha, on the other hand, marveled at the “texture of the rock formations (in the cave) especially the one that looks like an ice cream…it is indeed unique.”

The group also proceeded to the scenic Dragon River for bamboo rafting and for some fun using water cannons which, according to Juni’s journal, is “refreshing and a good way to get rid of stress.”

The highlight of this memorable day, however, was witnessing the Impression Sanjie Liu, a large-scale performance involving more than 600 performers and staged in a two-kilometer stretch of the Li River against the backdrop of several peaks. The students were collectively awe-stricken with the impressive colorful lighting, design, and wonderful performances that involved singing and dancing to convey a story. It was grand in its magnitude. “I have never seen a show like that before. It’s beautiful,” wrote Andrian in his journal. Yanghshou, indeed, is a city and an experience that the students will never forget.
